ELC 150 : TOPIC SENTENCE AND THESIS STATEMENT


TOPIC SENTENCE

A topic sentence is a sentence that capture the meaning of the entire paragraph or group of sentences. It tells what the passage is maily about.

Example:

The Egyption civilization was one of the most important culture of the acient world. This civilization flourished along the rich banks and delta of the Nile River for many centuries, from 3200 B.C. until the Roman conquest in 30 B.C.

THESIS STATEMENT

Every paper you write should have a main point, main idea, or central message. The argument you make in your paper should reflect this main idea. The sentence that captures your position on this main idea. The sentence that captures your position on this main idea is what we call a thesis statement.

Example:


The ability to purchase television advertising is essential for any candidate’s bid for election to the senate because television reaches millions of people and the thus has the ability to dramatically increase name recognition.
